Driving snow
2022-01-17
It did snow about 40 centimetres today. I suppose in some places that might be cause for a state of emergency, but where I live, that's just winter. It was pretty fun driving in it though.
My street was reduced to one lane (or rather, one person had already driven through it, in the middle, so that's where everybody else had to drive). The only way to avoid getting stuck was to keep your car moving. Slow down too much, and your tires would be spinning.
I just had to get out of my little street before another car in the opposite direction showed up and forced both of us to get stranded. The main streets would be plowed! But sadly, just at the corner, I saw headlights. And a baby.
A mom and her tiny baby were standing right on the side of the snowy road, exactly where I needed to move to in order to avoid this other car. And in that kind of snow, one's car could easily slide around beyond what you were steering for. I was really hoping to avoid hitting a baby on this trip, since I just needed milk.
Luckily, after watching me drive straight towards her, the mom picked up the little snowsuited starfish. The other car squeezed past me, and then I was able to go.
Well, technically that's a lie. I wasn't able to go. I was stuck because I'd stopped. So the mom and baby watched me rock back and forth for five minutes trying to break free of the snow. That baby didn't even offer to help push the car. So unhelpful!
Anyway, I got my milk. Now I can have cold hot chocolate milk. Coming back was more fun though since I knew how fast I'd need to drive to not get stuck, so when approaching my driveway, I had to plan how to manage a half turn drift so I'd bounce up and into my parking spot without hitting the neighbour's car.
