The Land of Imagination
2016-10-24
Growing up in a Christian environment and in Canada, I've had the rather paradoxical experience of loving Halloween and going to church at the same time. Are Christians allowed to like Halloween? Aren't witches and wizards evil?
Being gifted with a deep sense of imagination, the thought that just pretending to be something could itself be a crime is quite baffling to me. Were all the times that one of my friends pretended to be the bad guy and shooting us make him a murderer? Hopefully not, because I'm not paying the bills for our pretend jail, even if it is pretend money. Are the little girls dressed as princesses actually entitled to rule over the citizens of this nation?
As Logan the potato says in the strip, "Playing wizard is to practicing witchcraft what playing doctor is to practicing medicine." Nobody would confuse pretending to be a doctor with actually being one, and if a child decided to pick up a real knife and actually cut somebody open, then that's the time to break their little fantasy that this is something they should be playing around with.
Most of us can separate fantasy from reality. If you can't, then yes, don't pretend to be a witch or a wizard.
As for me, I'm going to dress my child up as something awesome this Halloween. Maybe a potato.
