Campfires always seem to produce a small little totalitarian fire government. There's the supplier of the kindling, directed by the fire starter. The fire starter thereafter becomes the fire warden, large poking stick in hand, and maintains and grows the fire over the night. It's best if you don't just carelessly toss logs on top of the fire warden's masterpiece. You're likely to get a hot poker swung in your direction. As a kid, this was my duty, gladly taken up. But never let anyone say the fire warden doesn't encourage help. Fire minions are always useful to fan the flames while the warden repositions the main logs. Just don't disturb the ember mix.
