Down the rabbit hole
2016-05-16
I've just come back from the Ottawa Comic Con and this is the third year I've attended. It's a relatively new event for our city, so it was intimidating to attend the first time. Would I need to dress up? Was I geeky enough to be there? Was it too geeky for me to be there?
When I got there, it both met and destroyed my expectations. I have never experienced such a welcoming and supportive environment as this event. The various cosplays people engaged in were incredible and compliments as to the handiwork were frequently exchanged. No matter what you looked like, you fit in. It made me wish the world outside that event treated people similarly.
Overall, it was a fantastic opportunity to see interesting things, catch a glimpse (or photo!) of favourite actors in the flesh, and take a break from the normal.
Of the costumes I've seen, my favourites tend to be the crossover cosplays, where one dresses as a character from TV show X, but blended with a totally different character from TV show Y. Last year a number of Star Trek actors were present, Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis in particular, so a couple dressed up as Will Riker and Deanna Troi, but with Will dressed as the Joker and Troi as Harley Quinn. Awesomely, this pair not only dressed the part, they interacted with everyone they met in proper (insane) Gotham character.
Comic con is indeed a trip through the looking glass.
